Engine No. 4 - Ernest S. Marsh
Built in 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive works in Pennsylvania, this saddle tank engine went to work for Nixon, New Jersey's Raritan River Sand Company. The sand company closed its railroad in 1950, and the engine was acquired by the Pine Creek Railroad (near Marlboro Township, New Jersey). Due to soaring maintenance costs, the Pine Creek No. 1 was sold as scrap in 1958. that same year, Imagineer Roger Broggie rescued the engine to be restored for Disneyland.
Note: A saddle tank originally sat atop this 1925 Baldwin's boiler, the added weight gave the engine better traction, but a homely & bulkier profile. Unlike the charming Fred Gurley, which was restored to look as it did in 1894 - Disney Imagineers redesigned the unattractive No. 4, modeling their project after the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad's famed Montezuma.

Engine No. 4 - Ernest S. Marsh
After its restoration, Engine No. 4 was named for Ernest S. Marsh, President of the Atchison, Topeka & Sante Fe Railway from 1957 to 1966. In 1958, the newly purchased engine had been misplaced during shipping. Walt Disney called his friend Marsh, who promptly found and rerouted the lost engine, personally expediting it to its proper destination in California.
Roger Broggie, head of the Disney Studios Machine Shop in Bubank, had supervised the construction of the C.K. Holliday & the E.P. Ripley, as well as the restoration of the Fred Gurley. During the $57,000 resotration, Broggie, Ward Kimball and Bob Gurr completely remodeled the engine's profile.
