Looff

King Arthur Carrousel - Looff: Identified by the scalloped, red saddle straps carved across his shoulders and flanks, Looff is named for one of America's most famous carousel carvers.

Charles I.D. Looff was a master carver who immigrated to the United States from Denmark. He and his family were famed for building beautiful hand-carved carousels and other amusement park attractions. Looff built the first Coney Island carousel, the Crescent Park Carousel in Rhode Island and California's Santa Monica Pier.

Since many of the hand-carved horses were acquired from other defunct carousels, several Looff carved horses appear on Disneyland's Dentzel model carousel.

When passing through Ellis Island in 1870, an immigration official told Looff that a middle name was required for his personal I.D. or identification. Looff did not have a middle name, so he chose I.D., his full name officially becoming Charles I.D. Looff.
